For those times when binary third-person pronouns won't do, what can we use? "They" has been used as a singular pronoun since at least Chaucer's time, but only now is it making inroads into formal speech. People have been trying to introduce other gender-neutral pronouns into English since at least the 1700s. What other nonstandard pronouns are currently in use? How has SF/F dealt with both gender-neutral and nonbinary pronouns? Which ones have garnered attention?
